Patan Durbar Museum to Launch Online Ticket Booking System for Visitors

Patan Durbar Museum is set to launch an online ticket booking system, making it easier for both domestic and international visitors to secure entry in advance. The museum, located in Lalitpur, is part of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned for its exceptional cultural and historical significance.

Currently, visitors are required to purchase tickets at physical counters. However, museum authorities have confirmed that the digital booking system is in its final testing phase.

Sureshman Lakhe, Chief of the Patan Durbar Museum, stated that the initiative aims to modernize visitor services. “Until now, it was compulsory to buy tickets from the physical counter. With the online booking system, tourists can conveniently purchase tickets from home. Testing is underway, and we plan to formally launch the service soon,” Lakhe said.

Digital Upgrade to Improve Visitor Experience

The online ticketing system builds on recent technological upgrades at the museum, including the introduction of QR code payment options at its two ticket counters. Officials believe that allowing advance online booking will:

  • Reduce long queues during peak seasons
  • Save time for visitors
  • Improve crowd management
  • Enhance overall visitor experience

This upgrade is particularly important during high tourist seasons when footfall increases significantly.

Strong Visitor Numbers in 2025

In 2025, the museum recorded 313,300 visitors, including 153,000 foreign tourists. Among international visitors, 43,053 were from SAARC countries, highlighting the museum’s strong regional and global appeal.

With the introduction of online ticket booking, officials expect smoother operations and better tourist flow management, allowing visitors to focus on exploring the museum’s extensive collection of traditional art, architecture, and historical artifacts.

Although an official launch date has not yet been announced, the service is expected to go live soon after successful completion of the testing phase.

This digital transformation marks a significant step forward in improving accessibility to one of Nepal’s most treasured cultural landmarks.
