FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered moderate in difficulty. No technical climbing is required, but you should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking 5–7 hours per day on uneven terrain. The altitude gain is gradual, with the highest point being Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,250 meters.

How many days does the trek take?

The trek typically takes 5 to 7 days, depending on your pace and chosen itinerary. Most packages also include extra days in Kathmandu and Pokhara, making the total trip around 9 to 11 days.

What is the best time to do the Mardi Himal Trek?

The best seasons are:

  • Spring (March to May) – Clear skies, blooming rhododendrons, and great visibility.
  • Autumn (September to November) – Stable weather, crisp views of the mountains, and pleasant temperatures.

Trekking is possible in winter (Dec–Feb) but can be cold, and monsoon season (June–August) is generally avoided due to slippery trails and leeches.

Do I need a permit for the Mardi Himal Trek?

Yes, you’ll need the following permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
These are usually included in organized trekking packages.

Is altitude sickness a concern on this trek?

While Mardi Himal doesn’t go extremely high, altitude sickness is still possible above 3,000 meters. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, or nausea. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and a gradual ascent help minimize the risk. Guides typically carry an oximeter to monitor oxygen levels.

What kind of accommodation is available?

Accommodation includes:

  • 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara
  • Teahouses or guesthouses during the trek (basic rooms, twin-sharing or dormitory)
Facilities are simple but clean, with warm meals and cozy atmospheres.

Are meals included during the trek?

Yes, all standard meals during the trek—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are included. Meals in Kathmandu and Pokhara (lunch and dinner) are usually not included unless specified. Seasonal fruits and purified water are also provided during the trek.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory and should cover high-altitude emergency evacuation. Make sure your policy includes trekking up to 4,500 meters.

How do I get to the trailhead?

You will travel by tourist bus or private vehicle from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From there, a private vehicle will take you to Kande, the starting point of the trek. After the trek, you’ll be picked up from Syauli Bazaar and driven back to Pokhara.

Can I charge my phone or camera during the trek?

Yes, but electricity can be limited or solar-powered in remote villages. Bring a power bank or solar charger as a backup, especially if you rely on your phone or camera for photos.

Is it possible to do the trek solo?

While it’s possible to trek solo, hiring a licensed guide and porter is highly recommended for safety, local insights, and navigation. Solo trekkers without experience might find route-finding and logistics challenging.

What should I pack for the trek?

Essential items include:

  • Warm clothing (layers, down jacket)
  • Sturdy trekking boots
  • Sleeping bag (can be rented)
  • Headlamp, water bottle, trekking poles, rain gear
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and basic first aid
