Jumla Rara Lake Trek is one of the most enchanting off-the-beaten-path adventures in western Nepal. This journey takes you through the remote wilderness of the Karnali region, leading to the pristine Rara Lake — affectionately known as the “Queen of Lakes.” Located within the Rara National Park, Nepal’s smallest national park, the area is a hidden gem filled with unspoiled landscapes, alpine meadows, dense pine and rhododendron forests, and isolated mountain villages that preserve centuries-old traditions.
Rara Lake, sitting beautifully at an altitude of 2,990 meters, is the largest freshwater lake in Nepal, stretching over 10.8 square kilometers. The surrounding area is home to over 500 species of flowering plants, 214 species of birds, and 20 species of mammals, including red pandas, musk deer, and even the elusive snow leopard. As GORP founder Bill Greer described it, Rara is “a shimmering blue jewel set in a ring of snowy peaks.”
This trek is ideal for those seeking solitude and natural beauty far from the busy trekking routes. You’ll explore Jumla, Danphe Lagna, Dhotu, and the stunning Rara Lake, returning via Gorusingha, Sinja, and Jaljala Chaur before flying back to Kathmandu. The trail combines untouched natural splendor with authentic local culture, offering a perfect balance of adventure and tranquility.
We begin our journey with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj — a vibrant town located in Nepal’s southwestern plains. The one-hour flight offers spectacular views of the Himalayas, green hills, and winding river valleys. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. If time permits, you can explore the colorful streets and local markets of Nepalgunj.

This morning, we take another short but scenic flight to Jumla, a remote mountain town and the starting point of our trek. After landing, we begin our gentle trek toward Danphe Lagna, walking through pine forests and small settlements while enjoying stunning mountain views.
Overnight at local guesthouse/tented camp in Danphe Lagna.
After breakfast, we start descending through dense forests of fir, birch, and bamboo. The trail passes water mills and the village of Kabra, famous for Shilajit — a mineral with healing properties. We climb up to Bhara village and continue descending to Chauro Khola and Chautha before entering Rara National Park. We cross the Ghurchi Lagna Pass (3,450m) adorned with prayer flags and descend steeply through spruce forests to reach Dhotu.
Overnight at local guesthouse/tented camp in Dhotu.
Today’s trek is short and incredibly rewarding. We ascend through terraced fields and cedar forests, passing the Thakuri village of Jhyari before reaching a ridge offering the first breathtaking view of Rara Lake. The serene blue waters surrounded by lush forests and snowy peaks make it a truly magical sight.

We spend the day exploring the area around Rara Lake, which lies within Rara National Park. Enjoy the peaceful environment, observe Himalayan birds, and perhaps spot rare wildlife such as red pandas, musk deer, and monkeys. The lake also serves as a sanctuary for migratory waterfowl.

After breakfast, we follow a trail along the Khatyar Khola River through forests of pine, spruce, and rhododendron. Gradually, we descend before a short climb to reach the small settlement of Gorusingha, beautifully located amidst green hills and meadows.

We continue descending along the Sinja Khola River, following the trail through fertile valleys and small villages. Sinja holds great historical importance as the capital of the ancient Malla Dynasty (12th–14th century). The ruins of old palaces and temples dedicated to goddess Bhagwati still remain.
Overnight at local guesthouse/tented camp in Sinja.
Today’s trail crosses the Sinja Khola several times over traditional log bridges. We pass farmlands, pine, and oak forests, gradually ascending to the beautiful pastureland of Jaljala Chaur, a vast meadow often dotted with grazing horses.
Overnight at local guesthouse/tented camp in Jaljala Chaur.
We begin with a gentle ascent through forests and meadows before reaching a ridge at 3,510m, then descend gradually toward Jumla. The scenic trail offers one last opportunity to enjoy the views of the remote western Himalayas.

After breakfast, we board a flight from Jumla to Nepalgunj and connect to our flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening reflecting on this memorable adventure.

It’s a moderate trek suitable for trekkers with average fitness. There are no technical climbs, but some days involve long walks (5–7 hours).
The best seasons are spring (March–June) and autumn (September–November) when the weather is clear and the scenery is most beautiful.
Yes, Rara is accessible year-round. Winter offers snow views, while monsoon (July–August) brings lush greenery — though flights may be affected by weather.
Basic lodges and tented camps during the trek, with standard hotels in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj. The region is remote, so expect simple facilities.
Limited connectivity. Some villages have mobile signals, but internet access is minimal — which adds to the wilderness experience.
You’ll need the Rara National Park Entry Permit and a TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card — both are arranged by the trekking agency.
Technically possible, but not recommended. Hiring a licensed guide ensures safety, local insight, and easier logistics in this remote region.
You may spot red pandas, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, langurs, and numerous bird species like the Himalayan monal and kalij pheasant.
