Medical Team Deployed to Himalayan region for Spring Mountaineering Season

A specialized medical team has been deployed to Nepal’s Himalayan region to provide essential health check-ups and treatment services for climbers and trekkers during the busy spring mountaineering season.

The Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal (HRAN) has mobilized an 11-member team, including both foreign and Nepali doctors, to key high-altitude destinations such as Everest Base Camp and Pheriche in the Solukhumbu District, as well as Manang district.

This initiative aims to provide reliable medical services and emergency support to both domestic and international trekkers and mountaineers traveling in high-altitude regions, where altitude sickness and related health risks are common.

Established in 1973, the Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal has been actively delivering medical assistance to tourists undertaking trekking and mountaineering expeditions, particularly during the peak spring and autumn climbing seasons.

With the start of the 2026 spring climbing season, the organization has deployed a dedicated team comprising five foreign doctors, two Nepali doctors, and additional support staff to ensure comprehensive medical coverage.

At Everest Base Camp, Australian doctor Samantha Allison Wills, Nepali doctor Prince Singh, and support staff member Lakpa Norbu Sherpa are providing medical services.

Similarly, the health post at Pheriche is staffed by Australian doctor Rebecca Allen Carpenter, American doctor Caitlin Brooke Harper, Nepali doctor Aakriti Singh, along with support staff Ang Dawa Sherpa and Thaneshwar Bhandari.

In Manang, medical services are being provided by American doctor Joseph Peter Mahoney, Australian doctor Ken J. Koh, and support staff member Prakash Khatri.

According to HRAN President Damber Parajuli, temporary health posts have been established at Everest Base Camp, Pheriche, and Manang village to offer immediate medical attention and emergency care to trekkers, climbers, and expedition support teams.

The Association has been operating a seasonal health camp at Everest Base Camp since 2003, while similar services have been continuously available in Pheriche since its establishment in 1973.

In addition, HRAN has been running medical camps in Manang since 1980 and in Gosaikunda since 1997, ensuring ongoing support for high-altitude travelers across Nepal.
