Lumbini: An Epitome of Peace in the Journey of Human Civilization

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chang Maoming, has described Lumbini as “an epitome of peace in the journey of human civilization,” underlining its growing importance in a world increasingly shaped by conflict and uncertainty.

Speaking during the International Meditation Day on Friday, part of the ongoing Third Lumbini International Peace Festival, Ambassador Maoming addressed a large gathering at the premises of Maya Devi Temple. Hundreds of monks, meditation practitioners, and participants had assembled for a mass meditation session aimed at promoting inner peace and global harmony.

Amid rising global instability and geopolitical tensions, the ambassador emphasized that peace is no longer merely an ideal but a fundamental necessity for humanity. “In today’s challenging world, peace is not only a shared aspiration of humankind but a core value of civilization itself,” he stated.

Referring to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, Ambassador Maoming noted that the sacred site has evolved beyond a religious destination into a universal symbol of peace. “Lumbini now belongs to all humanity. It represents the path of peace, coexistence, and compassion,” he said.

He also reflected on the deep historical, cultural, and philosophical ties between Nepal and China, shaped over centuries through Buddhist traditions and ancient trade linkages. According to him, China’s philosophy of harmony and respect for diversity, combined with Nepal’s Buddhist values of compassion and equality, offers valuable Eastern wisdom to address modern global challenges.

Highlighting the significance of meditation, Ambassador Maoming described it not only as a spiritual practice but also as a pathway to inner stability and global peace. “When the mind is at peace, nations remain peaceful; when the mind is secure, all beings are secure,” he remarked, adding, “the essence of meditation is awareness, and the essence of peace is action.”

The meditation program was jointly organized by the Nepal Tourism Board, Lumbini Development Trust, and the Embassy of China in Nepal. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to position Lumbini as a global hub for peace, spirituality, and sustainable tourism.

The festival, featuring meditation sessions, cultural performances, and sports events — aims to bring people together around shared values such as peace, development, equality, and justice. Ambassador Maoming also expressed optimism that Nepal-China friendship will continue to strengthen through such cultural and spiritual initiatives.

The event will conclude on Saturday with an International Peace Marathon, promoting unity and harmony through sports on a global platform.
