Nepal Hunting Reserve overview

Nepal Hunting Reserve offers the country’s only authorized hunting area — Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, located across the districts of Rukum, Myagdi, and Baglung in western Nepal. Established in 1987 AD, Dhorpatan covers an area of 1,325 sq. km, nestled in the majestic Dhaulagiri Himalayan Range.

The best hunting seasons in 2026 and 2027 are March, April, May, September, October, and November. This unique hunting experience allows hunters to test their skills in Nepal’s pristine alpine environment while contributing to conservation through government royalties.

The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation issues hunting licenses, allowing hunters to hunt only one animal per permit — either the Blue Sheep or the Himalayan Thar.

The area features alpine, sub-alpine, and temperate forests with vegetation like rhododendron, pine, fir, oak, and juniper. Other wildlife includes leopards, Himalayan black bears, wild boars, langurs, and bird species like Cheer Pheasants and Mountain Pigeons.

Hunting blocks include Barse, Seng, Dogadi, Sundaha, Surtibang, and Mustang. While other national parks and reserves in Nepal prohibit hunting, Dhorpatan remains the only official hunting destination.

Tented Camp Experience

Adventure Friendship provides full tented camp arrangements, including tents, cooking gear, food, and porters. The journey to Dhorpatan begins from Kathmandu, traveling by jeep or flight depending on preference and logistics. Our experienced team ensures a safe and comfortable expedition in the wild.

Hunting Equipment and Rifles

If you don’t have your own hunting rifle, Adventure Friendship will assist in acquiring government-approved rifles. You may also inform us about your preferred gun types and hunting experience in advance.
For reference:

  • Best Long-Range Rifle: 1895 SBL Rifle
  • Best Short-Range Rifle: New Cascade Short Barrel Rifle

Hunting in Nepal

Nepal is small but rich in biodiversity. The government allows hunting only in Dhorpatan, where limited permits are issued mainly for Himalayan Thar and Blue Sheep. This system ensures sustainable wildlife management and contributes to conservation funding.

Getting to Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve

Travelers reach Dhorpatan via a 10–12-hour drive from Kathmandu (approx. 248 km) through Pokhara, Baglung, and Burtibang. Adventure Friendship organizes all transport, permits, guides, porters, and logistics for a hassle-free hunting experience.
