Chulu West Peak Climbing overview

Chulu West Peak Climbing (6,419m) is one of the most rewarding trekking peaks in the Annapurna region, situated in the Damodar Himal of Manang district, northeast of the Annapurna Range. First summited by a Japanese expedition in 1953, these peak offers climbers a thrilling combination of trekking, mountaineering, and cultural exploration.

From the summit, climbers are rewarded with spectacular views of Annapurna I, II, III, and IV, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and Lamjung Himal. Compared to Chulu Far East Peak (6,059m), Chulu West is more technical, making it ideal for climbers seeking to progress from trekking peaks toward higher Himalayan expeditions.

The journey follows part of the Annapurna Circuit Trail, passing through lush valleys, alpine forests, yak pastures, and high passes, including the famous Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Along the way, climbers will also experience Gurung and Manangi culture, visit Buddhist monasteries, and explore the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath Temple.

Chulu West is often chosen by mountaineers as preparation for 8,000m peaks, thanks to its technical climbing challenges and high-altitude conditions. With proper acclimatization, expert Sherpa guidance, and a good level of fitness, the climb is a safe and exhilarating adventure.

The best seasons for climbing are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when conditions are most stable.

We begin our journey with a scenic drive along the Prithvi Highway, following the Trishuli and later the Marsyangdi River. The drive offers views of lush hillsides, rural villages, and local life. Previously, vehicles could only reach Besisahar, but with road extensions, we now drive further up to Chamje.
