Makalu Expedition overview

Are you seeking one of the most challenging and technical peak-climbing adventures in Nepal? The Makalu Expedition is an ideal choice—renowned as one of the most demanding climbs among the world’s 8,000-meter mountains. Standing proudly at 8,463 meters, Mt. Makalu is the 5th highest peak on Earth, rising dramatically in the heart of the eastern Himalayas.

Makalu lies just 14 miles southeast of Mount Everest, surrounded by the deep Barun River gorge and the isolated Arun Valley. It also features two striking subsidiary peaks: Kangchungtse (Makalu II, 7,678 m) and Chomo Lonzo (7,804 m).

The trekking trail to Makalu Base Camp passes through Makalu–Barun National Park, one of Nepal’s richest biodiversity hubs. The region is home to lush alpine meadows, pristine forests of rhododendron, oak, and sal, and diverse wildlife.
Culturally, the route takes you through traditional settlements of the Bhote, Rai, and Sherpa communities, allowing insight into their well-preserved culture and lifestyle.

Along the trek, you will enjoy magnificent Himalayan views including Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Baruntse, Chamlang, and many more. The journey begins with a scenic flight to Tumlingtar, followed by a drive to Khadbari and a multi-day trek through Num, Seduwa, Tashigaon, and high passes like Kauma La, Tutu La, and Keke La.

After reaching Makalu Base Camp, the climbing phase begins with acclimatization, technical training, and multiple climbing rotations supported by experienced Sherpa guides. Once you successfully summit, you retrace your steps back to Tumlingtar and fly to Kathmandu.

Overall, the Makalu Expedition offers an unmatched blend of remote trekking, cultural exploration, technical mountaineering, and unbeatable Himalayan scenery.
