Mad Honey Hunting in Nepal overview

Mad Honey Hunting in Nepal is one of the most thrilling and culturally rich experiences you can have in the Himalayas. Far beyond just harvesting wild honey, this ancient tradition is a deeply spiritual and communal event rooted in the harmony between humans and nature. The brave Gurung and Magar honey hunters climb towering cliffs to harvest the rare mad honey—a potent, medicinal nectar produced by giant Himalayan honeybees (Apis laboriosa).

Before the hunt begins, locals perform spiritual rituals to honor nature’s gods—offering flowers, rice, ghee, and incense to seek blessings for a safe and successful honey harvest. This extraordinary practice has been passed down through generations, symbolizing respect for the mountains, bees, and environment.

Your journey begins in Kathmandu, where you’ll explore ancient temples, bustling markets, and world heritage sites before heading west to the honey hunting sites – Bhujung, Pasgaun, Ghalegaun (Lamjung), Tikot (Myagdi), or Khudi (Kaski) – depending on the season and site availability. You’ll travel through terraced fields, charming mountain villages, and lush forests to witness the traditional wild mad honey hunting firsthand.

This 8-day Mad Honey Hunting Tour is a rare combination of adventure, cultural immersion, and natural discovery – perfect for travelers seeking something truly authentic in Nepal.
